Reading

Reading is an essential skill for everyone, just in order to navigate the world around them. Habitual, regular reading is the best fuel for a child’s linguistic knowledge base—the more words and sentences they come across, the wider their vocabulary and grammatical skills will become.

Texts of all genres—whether fiction or non-fiction—increase awareness of the world and spark new interests or curiosities. Reading is a wonderful way to activate one’s imagination, reaching beyond what a child already knows about the world around them.

The benefits of reading (for pleasure) to children as they move through Primary years are countless. Readers are likely to handle school workloads better, and a richer expressiveness in written tasks and speech is often distinguishable. These traits are invaluable in SATs and 11+ Entrance Exams, and life beyond school.
